BERLIN, Aug 30 (Reuters) - Werder Bremen have signed former France and Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre on a two-year contract, the Bundesliga club said on Monday.
Werder are in this season’s Champions League, drawn in a group with defending champions Inter Milan, one of nfl jerseys
Silvestre’s former clubs, Tottenham Hotspur and Twente Enschede.
The 33-year-old Silvestre, who spent nine seasons at Manchester United before joining Arsenal in 2008, was without a club after his contract with Arsenal ran out in June.

said. “There were other offers but I was fascinated by (coach) Thomas Schaaf and (director) Klaus Allofs.”

U.S. fans discover use for tie
RUSTENBURG, South Africa – After the game ended, strangely on a substitution, the Americans in Block 215 at the top and back of Royal Bafokeng Stadium didn’t seem to know what to make of the night: A 1-1 tie with England in what was the most anticipated United States soccer game in decades.
“Is that it?” a fan shouted as the officials waved their arms, stopping play. Everything went still and a numbness fell over the throng.
A tie?

On a staircase below Block 210 a group of Americans donned 3-corner hats, dangled a “Don’t Tread on Me,” flag from the railing and hollered at the crowd below.
And beneath them Americans began to gather, laughing and pointing. It was all so huge.
All around the English fans walked glumly toward the parking lots, their once certain victory now in tatters, their World Cup dreams dealt a mighty blow. Even if it took the Americans a little time to comprehend the significance of this tie, the British understood all too well. It might as well have been a loss for them.

Orania, South Africa: Where apartheid lives on
ORANIA, South Africa – You come because there have been stories. Because around the World Cup the talk has been about peace and togetherness and the vanquishing of old racial wounds in the hope that the world’s arrival might stimulate new solutions. And you hear of a place that wants none of football jerseys that. A place where white and black can’t live side-by-side in the rainbow nation. A place settled by the old South Africa who couldn’t cope with the new South Africa.
And you wonder why such a place should exist at all.
So you drive early one morning from Johannesburg, long before the sun climbs into the sky. You go past the flat-topped hills of mining country, through dusty towns and then across the long, open African savannah spotted with acacia trees until five hours later, near the banks of the Orange River, you find Orania.
And yes, it is true. In a country 80 percent black, there is a town that has made itself 100 percent white. Determined to preserve the Afrikaner culture 20 years after the fall of apartheid.
On the surface, Orania seems like a normal village. It has a grocery store, a gas station and a small bookstore that sells town T-shirts. A woman at a desk in the bookstore smiles and asks you to sign a guestbook. The primary language is Afrikaans, not English. The town’s public relations director, a former physician named John Strydom, comes out and shows a video. On the screen, children ride bicycles and the narrator explains that “there is a place where children can still have a comfortable childhood” and “residents can walk without looking over their shoulder.”
And it is clear that without even mentioning the words, this is all about black and white.
Driving around Orania, Strydom points out all the sights: the new houses built with bales of nfl apparel straw for insulation and solar panels on the roofs, the radio station, the small but lavish hotel and gleaming spa that overlook the river. He also explains the criteria for buying a house in Orania: one must submit an application, promise to uphold the Afrikaner culture and be approved by an administrative board.
“We can choose who lives here,” he says bluntly.
When asked if that was restricted by race he replied: “Most people in South Africa wouldn’t want to come here if they are black.”
Once the Afrikaners controlled South Africa, often brutally; this, despite the fact they were a white minority in a country that is predominantly black. In the 1940s, they invented apartheid as an official form of segregation and ran the country almost as a dictatorship until black uprisings and the world’s scorn broke that rule. When Nelson Mandela was released from prison in 1990, it was only a matter of time before Afrikaner rule was over.
This is when a missionary named Carel Boshoff, the son-in-law of Hendrick Frensch Verwoerd, the architect of apartheid, banded with a group of 40 families to buy a mostly abandoned government construction camp and turn it into Orania. From the beginning, the idea was to separate. Orania had its own flag and its own currency (the ora, the first three letters of the town’s name) and set out to build something self-sustaining. Now, the 700 or so residents of Orania live as if it is their own country.
In fact, when asked who he considers to be his president, Boshoff’s son Carel (IV), who is now the community’s leader rambles for a moment, talking about how all people see government in different ways. When pressed on the question he finally says, “Right here,” and points to the ground at his feet.
Carel (IV) is an intellectual man, with large glasses and wavy long hair. He could be a young radical in Amsterdam if he wasn’t here in this small farming town explaining why he wants an Afrikaner state. He likes to talk in concepts and enjoys the show about international politics he hosts every week on the radio station.
He picks his words carefully but the community’s philosophy spills out nonetheless. Since the Afrikaner is white in heritage then the culture that is preserved must be white as well. The people of Orania don’t have anything against black people, he says, they just don’t share a culture. And if they don’t share a culture then they shouldn’t be living together.
Mostly Orania taps into white fear. Carel (IV) speaks a lot about how black rule has forced Afrikaners out of wholesale nfl jerseys work because of Affirmative Action programs designed to get blacks jobs. An experienced white engineer could suddenly become a technical assistant to an inexperienced black employee, he says.
He also talks a lot about violence in other parts of South Africa. People in cities such as Johannesburg live behind giant walls and electric fences. South Africa is quickly becoming a failed state, Carel (IV) says. Any thought the World Cup is going to bring unity and help people confront two decades of growing pains is ridiculous, he says. The country’s future, with what he calls “corruption” in the mostly black African National Congress, is bleak.
“There’s no reason a country as diverse as South Africa should be united and together,” he says.
The best plan, he adds, is to “stand out of the tension.”
And yet that is the misfortune of Orania, this fact it wants to step back from the fight to build South Africa. It is a beautiful town with imaginative people, like Carel (IV)’s nephew, also named Carel who is a student in Pretoria, who loves the idea of the World Cup and yet dreams of returning to Orania.
“We’re building something for ourselves here,” he says.
But why? Why not for the country? Why hide a spectacular hotel and a spa on the edge of the river and not share it with the rest of South Africa? All around the country there is growth and building, even among the “tension” as Carel (IV) calls it. Just a few days ago in the black Johannesburg township of Soweto, a group of nfl throwback jerseys black residents gathered at a restaurant for the monthly meeting of their saving group. Together, they said, they give whatever money they want to put away to one member who deposits it in the bank. Then when enough has been saved to buy a car or a house or pay for school they can pull it out. The group serves as their support.

NFL experiments with 8th on-field official
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—The NFL is experimenting with an eighth on-field official at four preseason games.
Called a “deep judge,” the official was part of nfl jerseys crews working Saturday’s Tennessee-Carolina and New York Giants-Baltimore games. The official was also used at Friday’s Atlanta-Miami contest and is scheduled for Thursday’s Cincinnati-Indianapolis game.
The official is positioned in the defensive backfield opposite the back judge. His primary responsibility is to watch for eligible receivers, but can also help with watching other parts of the field as assignments have changed since the umpire was moved into the offensive backfield.

Favre going where few QBs have gone before
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP)—The aches and pains simply never go away for Brett Favre(notes) anymore.
Nineteen NFL seasons have taken their toll, and when he gets out of cheap nfl jerseys bed in the morning he feels every one of the hits he’s taken. His ankle barks at him as soon as his foot hits the floor, his knees creak as he stands up and his back groans as he stretches to get loosened up for another day as a 40-year-old quarterback.
“There’s nothing on me 100 percent,” Favre said. “There wasn’t anything on me 100 percent last year or the year before. The surgeries, I think, have made me a little better, but I’ve played 309 straight games, I can’t complain.”
He can’t quit, either.
As he prepares to enter his 20th season in the league, Favre is going where few quarterbacks have gone before him. And he’s looking to lead the Minnesota Vikings to a place even fewer QBs have taken this tortured franchise—to the Super Bowl.
According to STATS LLC, 17 quarterbacks in NFL history have started a season in which they turned 40 by Nov. 1. The vast majority of those players spent the waning days of their careers watching from the sidelines. George Blanda played until he was 48 as a kicker and backup quarterback who did complete 119 passes after turning 40.
Favre is the only 40-year-old quarterback to win a playoff game and one of only three to start more than six games in his 40s. He joins Warren Moon and Vinny Testaverde(notes), who each made 25 starts in their 40s.
How does he do it? And what makes him want to leave a cushy life on his 465-acre spread in Hattiesburg, Miss., where he has more money than he could spend in two lifetimes, to endure another season of punishment?
“I look at him and he’s a competitor,” former quarterback Len Dawson told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. “He loves the game. He loves the competition. He probably gets bored. What’s he going to do when he’s down on that farm in Mississippi? Run around on that tractor? That would get old real quick.”
If anyone can speak to the mentality of a 40-year-old quarterback, it’s Dawson. The Hall of Famer and Super Bowl winner is one of the select group to play the position at that age, when he started five games for the Kansas City Chiefs in his final season in 1975.
The Chiefs were rebuilding then, which made that final year painful in more ways than one for Dawson. He recalled taking a hit so hard in a game against Baltimore that he knew he couldn’t go on much longer.
Still, he managed to play in 12 games during that transition season, completing 66 percent of his passes for 1,095 yards, five touchdowns and a solid 90 quarterback rating.
“At age 40, you’re not as quick and as agile as you are in your late 20s, but you can rely on your ability to think because you’ve been through it and know what it takes,” Dawson said.
Favre leans on smarts, instincts and gut feelings today more than he ever has, but that right arm of his still has plenty of juice.
“My arm felt like it was 21 last year,” Favre said. “Amazing.”

“He’s still got the tools. He can still play,” Hutchinson said. “Everybody just has to step up around him and give him the opportunity.”
The Vikings are banking on it. Favre came back last year in large part to show his former team—the Green Bay Packers—that he still had something left. He beat them twice in convincing fashion and was one play away from taking the Vikings to the Super Bowl.
“It’s amazing what he has done and what he’s continuing to do. It really is,” said Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck(notes), who came into the league with the Packers 13 years ago, when Favre was in his seventh season as a starter. “The streak that he has going is just ridiculous.”
So what is the motivation this season? Favre said he’s got nothing left to prove, but Dawson isn’t so sure.
Toward the end of his career, Dawson kept going in part to show all the younger guys in the league that he could still play.
“Certainly, and I could,” Dawson said. “And so could (Favre). I’m sure that’s part of it. Sometimes you have to prove it to yourself. It’s in your blood and that’s all you’ve done all your life to age 40. Maybe it’s a little frightening to think about finishing and going out in the real world.”

According to STATS LLC, 17 quarterbacks in NFL history have started a season in which they turned 40 by Nov. 1. The vast majority of those players spent the waning days of their careers watching from the sidelines. George Blanda played until he was 48 as a kicker and backup quarterback who did complete 119 passes after turning 40.
Favre is the only 40-year-old quarterback to win a playoff game and one of only three to start more than six games in his 40s. He joins Warren Moon and Vinny Testaverde(notes), who each made 25 starts in their 40s.
How does he do it? And what makes him want to leave a cushy life on his 465-acre spread in Hattiesburg, Miss., where he has more money than he could spend in two lifetimes, to endure another season of punishment?
“I look at him and he’s a competitor,” former quarterback Len Dawson told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. “He loves the game. He loves the competition. He probably gets bored. What’s he going to do when he’s down on that farm in Mississippi? Run around on that tractor? That would get old real quick.”
If anyone can speak to the mentality of a 40-year-old quarterback, it’s Dawson. The Hall of Famer and Super Bowl winner is one of the select group to play the position at that age, when he started five games for the Kansas City Chiefs in his final season in 1975.
The Chiefs were rebuilding then, which made that final year painful in more ways than one for Dawson. He recalled taking a hit so hard in a game against Baltimore that he knew he couldn’t go on much longer.
Still, he managed to play in 12 games during that transition season, completing 66 percent of his passes for 1,095 yards, five touchdowns and a solid 90 quarterback rating.
“At age 40, you’re not as quick and as agile as you are in your late 20s, but you can rely on your ability to think because you’ve been through it and know what it takes,” Dawson said.
Favre leans on smarts, instincts and gut feelings today more than he ever has, but that right arm of his still has plenty of juice.
“My arm felt like it was 21 last year,” Favre said. “Amazing.”

Top to bottom, Shanahan takes charge of Redskins

ASHBURN, Va. (AP)—Less than a month after taking the job of Washington Redskins coach, Mike Shanahan called a meeting.
A big meeting. Everyone who works for the franchise was invited, from secretaries to marketing people to the employees based at the stadium on the other side of D.C. The only people not there were the players, who were off because it was February. It took place in the Redskins Park auditorium and lasted about an hour. Shanahan gave a power point presentation of football jerseys some 50 points he thought were “very important for the organization.”
“You talk to everybody,” Shanahan said in an interview with The Associated Press. “And everybody’s got a job to do. And you let everybody know how important their job is to the success of this organization. For us to win a Super Bowl, it’s going to take everybody, not just the players, not just the coaches. We’ve got to have the best of the best in all different areas, secretaries, marketing, stadium personnel. Everybody’s got a job to do, and that was the essence.”
No one at Redskins Park had ever seen anything like it, not from a coach. Joe Gibbs(notes), as the joke goes, was so football-focused he probably couldn’t have found the marketing department if he tried. Steve Spurrier couldn’t remember the names of his players, much less the random people he might meet in the hallway. Here was a new coach trying to unite the entire organization, an important step as he went about setting a new tone of order, discipline and control for a franchise that has been a roller-coaster of inconsistency for more than a decade and was coming off a 4-12 season.
While the players weren’t at the meeting, they quickly got the message as well. When Shanahan made the following comment at a chamber of commerce speech in May, he might as well been speaking directly at a certain unhappy defensive lineman named Albert Haynesworth(notes).
“I like the standard set high,” Shanahan said. “The one thing that I found out players want is consistency. Once you give a special player or a star player extra attention or let him get away with things, it takes way the morale of the team.”
So Shanahan is in charge - in full, unyielding charge - of one of the most storied organizations in the NFL, having been given contractual control by Dan Snyder, who seems to really, really mean it this time when he says he’s become a hands-off owner. Gibbs, though in the Hall of Fame, never wanted his picture on the front of the media guide, but Shanahan is there in grand style - holding a football while lined up ahead of the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument and U.S. Capitol.
It’s certainly valid to say he’s earned it, having won two Super Bowls in the late 1990s with the Denver Broncos. He’s tied for 16th with 154 regular-season and postseason wins, only 17 behind Gibbs. He turned 58 this week, so he should have plenty of vigor left, and he’s had a year off to recharge the batteries after being fired by the Broncos at the end of the 2008 season.
He spent the 12 months of Dallas Cowboys jersey downtime visiting other teams, watching games on television and making contacts with potential assistant coaches so he could assemble a staff quickly when he got a new job, but nothing that he saw or heard persuaded him to change his style.
“He’s the same,” said running backs coach Bobby Turner, who held the same job under Shanahan in Denver. “He’s demanding. He’s a perfectionist, and he’s expecting perfection.”
Some people inside Redskins Park initially thought Shanahan was a bit of a neat freak, but that’s because the place was so cluttered. The training room and weight room were a mess, so Shanahan had them tidied up. Newspapers would pile up at the front desk; that’s no longer the case. There’s new paint, inside and out.
“He wants our building and everything to look like a professional building,” said his son, offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. “If it looks dirty and no one’s addressing it, he’s definitely going to notice it.”
Mike Shanahan readily cites the people who have helped him hone his leadership style, among them Barry Switzer at Oklahoma, Darrell Mudra at Eastern Illinois (Shanahan’s alma mater) and the winning machine that became the San Francisco 49ers under Bill Walsh and George Seifert.
The common theme: Come up with a vision and get everyone in the organization behind it. It was as the offensive coordinator with the 49ers in 1992 that Shanahan first witnessed a version of the all-inclusive meeting he led at Redskins Park in February.
“Everybody knew they were part of the winning process,” Shanahan said. “Everybody’s got to be on the same page. There was a culture. There was a standard that had been set. There was no substitution for the standard.”
Shanahan took that philosophy to Denver and has now brought it to Washington. And it comes with no exceptions, as Haynesworth has been quick to learn.
A tense, drawn-out and very public test of the coach’s what-I-say-goes authority has dominated Shanahan’s first seven months in Washington, and the coach has come out on top - at least so far - by not wavering a bit. Haynesworth is a two-time All-Pro with a $100 million contract, but he must abide by the rules, even if that means alienating him by making him pass a conditioning test and play with the backups as a de facto punishment for boycotting the team’s offseason workouts.
After all, Shanahan nearly died from a ruptured kidney after taking a hit while playing quarterback at Eastern Illinois yet wanted to keep on playing, so he doesn’t have much room for sympathy when Haynesworth has a sore knee or some variation of a headache.
“He sets the rules; we’ve got to abide by them,” fullback Mike Sellers(notes) said. “There’s no questioning.”
Even when Shanahan appears to loosen up - taking the players bowling instead of practice, for instance - it’s a meticulously calculated move. This is the coach who created a game room during a Super Bowl week with the Broncos so the players would stay in the team hotel and out of trouble. There’s nothing like keeping them happy and under control at the same time.
“He’s thrown a lot of bones. It’s good for morale,” defensive end Vonnie Holliday(notes) said. “If you’re working at the Ford dealership and you do things like this for your workers, they’ll want to work hard for you.”
Shanahan can be humorous one moment, then hit you with a look that could freeze a forest fire. He exudes confidence, sometimes refreshingly so. Some coaches like to find ways to spread responsibility, and therefore the blame when things go wrong. Does Shanahan have someone in the booth specifically telling him when to throw the replay flag? No, he prefers to look at the stadium replay and make the decision himself. Does he carry the infamous chart that’s supposed to tell you when to go for a 2-point conversion? Ha!
“I’ve been coaching for a while,” he said, nonchalantly. “It should be automatic for you.”
One of the knocks against Shanahan in Denver is that he became overconfident after winning the Super Bowls, that he believed his system was good enough to mold any group into winners. Both of his titles came with John Elway at quarterback, but Shanahan won only one playoff game over his last 10 seasons in Denver after Elway retired.
But Shanahan says there’s no chance of winning it all if everyone isn’t buying into the plan. He likes to tell the story of how he jettisoned former first-round receivers Mike Pritchard and Anthony Miller in favor of undrafted Rod Smith(notes) and free agent Ed McCaffrey during his early years as head coach of Denver Broncos jersey the Broncos, the lesson being that no one is irreplaceable.
